According the NIA Constitution, "Members in full shall have one vote." (Article III, Section G)  


Furthermore, "any certified NOLS or WMI instructor who has been employed as an instructor by NOLS within the current or past three calendar years or has signed a contract for future work, and who has paid her/his dues shall be considered a member in full."  (Article III, Section A)  


Associate Members are not eligible to vote.  Associate Members include Senior Staff who haven't worked in the past three years, and IC or ITC Grads who haven't yet worked a course.


The Constitution "may be amended by a two thirds (2/3) majority of those members voting." (Article XI, Section A)


Voting History

  • 11/1-12/1/2019 Membership for in-town employees. NIA Members vote to amend Article III Section A of the Constitution to read: "Persons meeting one of the following criteria, so long as they have paid their dues, shall be considered members in full: any certified Expedition or Wilderness Medicine instructor who has been employed as an instructor by NOLS within the current or past three calendar years or has signed a contract for future work; any certified Expedition or Wilderness Medicine instructor who has successfully completed an instructor course or instructor training course and has signed a contract for future work; any intern, fellow, or employee below the level of the NOLS Executive Team, who has received a paycheck or stipend from NOLS within the current or past three calendar years or has signed a contract for future work."  This change will take effect on May 10th, 2020.
  • 11/1-12/1/2019 Annual NIA Elections.  Incumbent Board Members Drew Seitz and Ira Slomski-Pritz are re-elected.  Expeditions instructor Marissa Bieger and Expeditions instructor/Program Supervisor Caio Poletti are elected to the NIA Board.
  • 11/16-12/16/2018 Size of the NIA Board is Adjusted.  NIA Members vote to amend Article IV of the Constitution to read: "The voting members of the NIA are to elect a President of the NIA every 24 months. In addition, they are to elect eight to twelve Board Members. Each year the membership will elect four to six Board Members for 24-month terms to maintain a board of eight to twelve Directors. Any office voluntarily vacated will be filled by the board for the remainder of that term if the board drops below eight members. "  The first sentence of Article VIII is amended to read: "The NIA Board is composed of eight to twelve members and the President." Text amended is in red.  96% In favor, 4% Opposed.  
  • 11/16-12/16/2018 Annual NIA Elections.  Incumbent Board Members Fabio Oliveira, Molly Herber, Julia Pieper, and Summers Eatmon Williams are re-elected.  Wilderness Medicine Instructor Clemencia Sky Caporale and Expeditions Instructor Paul Calver are elected to the Board.  Current Board Member David Durant is elected NIA President. 
  • 11/17-12/17/2017 Annual NIA Elections.  Incumbent Board Members David Durant, Drew Seitz, Annemarie Vocca, and Ira Slomski-Pritz are re-elected.  Expeditions Instructor and NOLS Wilderness Medicine HQ Staff Member Mike Froehly is elected to the Board. Expeditions Instructor and NIA Northeast Branch Representative Hannah Darrin is elected to the Board.  All terms ending 2019.  
  • 11/20-12/20/2016 Annual NIA Elections.  Incumbent President Sean Williams is re-elected to a second term, running unopposed.  Incumbent Board Members Fabio Raimo de Oliveira and Summers Eatmon Williams are both re-elected.  Adam Baxter, Casey Pikla, Molly Herber, and Mariana Candeia Mita are all elected to the Board.
  • 11/20-12/20/2016: Full Membership for IC & ITC Graduates.  NIA Members vote to amend Article III, Section A of the Constitution to read: "Any certified Expedition or Wilderness Medicine instructor who has been employed as an instructor by NOLS, or who as successfully completed an instructor course and is eligible for hire within the current or past three calendar years or has signed a contract for future work, and has paid his/her dues shall be considered a member in full."  Text amended is in red.  86% In favor, 14% Opposed.  
  • 11/15-12/15/2015: Annual NIA Elections.  Incumbent Board Members David Durant, Drew Seitz, Allie Maloney, Annemarie Vocca, and Abbie Wehner are re-elected.  Edmilson Fonseca is elected to the Board.
  • 11/24-12/27/2014: Annual NIA Elections.  Board Member Sean Williams is elected NIA President.  Fabio Raimo de Oliveira, Aaron Divine, and Jon Kempsey are re-elected to the Board, term ending December 2016.  Branch Representatives Andy Clifford and Summers Eatmon are elected to the Board, term ending December 2016.  Instructors Tim Dorsey and Abbie Wehner tie.  Abbie volunteers to fill a vacancy on the Board for the term ending December 2015, and is appointed by the Board to do so, paving the way for Tim to become the first WMI-only Instructor on the NIA Board of Directors.  His term will expire in December 2016.   
  • 8/3-8/31/2014: Full Membership for WMI Instructors.  NIA Members vote to amend Article III, Section A of the Constitution to read: "Any certified NOLS or WMI instructor who has been employed as an instructor by NOLS within the current or past three calendar years or has signed a contract for future work, and who has paid her/his dues shall be considered a member in full."  Text amended is in red.  84% In favor, 16% Opposed.
